Guinness glass celebrates 250 years

Published:  08 February, 2009

Guinness is celebrating its 250th anniversary with the launch of a limited-edition glass which reminds drinkers they are consuming 2.3 units of alcohol.

Diageo GB said the move was an industry first and would help Guinness drinkers stay within government guidelines on alcohol consumption.

The company will issue more than half a million glasses to pubs, bars and other retailers across Britain.

The signature of Arthur Guinness, who signed the lease at the St James' Gate brewery in Dublin in 1759, is also included on the glass.

Guinness marketing director John Roscoe said:  "We know that not all alcohol is served in bespoke glasses like Guinness is, but if the glasses are effective it would be good to see units on glassware becoming more widespread. This is one way we can help people drink sensibly.

"To mark the 250th anniversary we have a great year of celebrations planned for Guinness so watch this space for all the latest activities."
