UNWINS CLOSES AGENCY BUSINESS

Published:  23 July, 2008

Unwins has decided to close its agency division, the recently renamed Birchwood Agencies, in its quest to concentrate on its core competency of retailing'. All agency principals have now been notified, with many already in advanced stages of negotiation with other UK-based companies. The company says it remains committed to the brands represented by Birchwood and will maintain their listings throughout the estate. They will be available through Phillips Newman Wholesale. Julie McNeil has been retained by the company to administrate the handover period, which is expected to last until the end of 2002. Giles Wood, previously sales and marketing director, has moved across to the marketing and new product development team at Unwins. As part of our extensive restructuring programme we have taken a look at all of our activities which do not form part of our core business,' explained David Wetz, chief executive of Unwins. We have had extensive discussions with our agency principals and bottomed out a way of working with them to maintain listings and supply without the added business layer of the agency division,' said Wetz.
