"Functional" wines with added antioxidants could be available in UK stores by next summer, according to Harpers magazine.

But the wines' producers will first have to convince the European Commission to approve their special vinification process.

The wines, already being sold on trial in Australia, are produced by Pendarves Estate REW.

They contain 100mg of the antioxidant resveratrol per litre, compared with a typical 1mg per litre in normal white wines and 3-6mg per litre in reds.

The patented process involves extracting the resveratrol from grapes before concentrating it and adding it back to the wine.
