FEARS OF EL NINO IN CHILE

Published:  23 July, 2008

Chilean wine growers are fearful of a possible recurrence of El Nio, according to Aurelio Montes, director/ winemaker for the eponymous premium wine producer. Montes told Harpers that Pacific ocean temperatures have been rising and that Chile had been dogged by rain this winter, causing concern that El Nio may hit this year. Montes predicts that the Chilean harvest will be between 10-20% down this year, but that quality should be good. We have had poor set and some bunches are 10-20 grams lighter,' he said. Nevertheless, we had better, more prudent canopy management and we have good fruit with good flavours.'
