Asian demand elevates Bordeaux 2005 prices

Published:  23 July, 2008

High demand from Asian markets has driven up prices for Bordeaux 2005.

This is the verdict of Simon Staples (pictured), sales director at Berry Bros & Rudd, who was speaking ahead of the UK arrival of the vintage.

He said En Primeur trading had been lively with over 53,000 cases of Bordeaux 2005 set to arrive in the UK.

Sales at the London merchant have been pronounced with BB&R selling 1,700 cases worth 6.8m in the last week alone.

Staples commented: "2005 Bordeaux is an incredibly impressive vintage and demand from the Far East and Russia has pushed prices sky high.

"Despite the fact most of the 2005 red wines won't be ready to drink for at least 10 years, we are expecting some Berrys' customers who have been waiting in anticipation for their wine to arrive to show up to collect it."

High quality vintages could be expected to return in the region of 10-15% interest each year over five years, he concluded.
