Rare champagne sells for 42,500

Published:  23 July, 2008

A New York auction of rare and collectable champagnes has sold a bottle of Dom Perignon vintage rose 1959 for 42,500.

The sale, which was conducted by Acker Merrall & Condit, auctioned a series of champagnes from the 1800s to 1996 with many lots amassed from the personal collection of New York property tycoon Robert Rosania.

One private collector auctioned off his entire wine cellar, which included lots such as a Dom Perignon Vintage 1928 magnum and 12 bottles of the 1961 vintage as served as Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding.

The Dom Perignon '59 had never been commercially released and was bought by an anonymous investor for the record sum.

Richard Geoffroy, Dom Perignon chef de cave said: "Dom Perignon Rose Vintage 1959 is a rare, superlative, mythical vintage. Powerful and solar, its light will inspire the creation of Dom Perignon Rose forever."
