Alcohol Concern appoints new chief

Published:  23 July, 2008

The charity's health lobbyist Don Shenker has been appointed as chief executive.

As former director of policy and services at Alcohol Concern, Shenker said he wants to "strengthen alcohol control and intervention policies."

"There has never been a better time for knocking on government's door to strengthen alcohol control and intervention policies. The evidence is clearly on our side," he said.

Shenker added that his first priority is to increase the charity's membership to build a solid "coalition" to take its arguments to the government.

"We must continue the excellent progress the field has achieved so far and campaign hard for increased funding for a range of alcohol interventions and for much tighter policy controls to reduce the rising costs of alcohol misuse," he said.

Shenker replaces Srabani Sen who stepped down in February after three years in the role.
