Port house hits back at media

Published:  23 July, 2008

Leading Port producer Symington Family Estates has criticised the UK media for claiming Port sales are on a downward spiral.

In a statement it said: "Press comments in the UK have given the misleading impression that Port sales in the UK are in decline."

According to Douro and Port Wine Institute total Port shipments to the UK increased by 1.3%.

Nielsen data shows total Port sales in the UK off trade grew by 4% in volume and 3% in value in 2007 (MAT to 29/12/07).

"These are excellent figures and factually contradict the perceived wisdom that Port is not doing well," the Symington family said.

The statement continued: 'there is no doubt that Port prices will have to rise as a result of the dramatic decline in the value of the Pound; less 10% in the last 12 months." It also claimed low stock levels had created an imminent shortage of young Port.

The Symington Family Estates include Dow's, Warre's and Graham's.
