New Zealand corners 5-and-over UK market

Published:  23 July, 2008

There has been a marked increase in sales of New Zealand wine products in the UK, new figures suggest.

Information from the New Zealand Winegrowers has shown that wine from the country now counts for over 10% of the UK's 5-and-over market.

This equates to one in every eight bottles in the price range - a market that is worth over 1 billion.

Chris Yorke, New Zealand Winegrowers' global marketing director, said the growth was impressive "especially considering New Zealand only produces 0.3% of the world's wine".

He added: "The United Kingdom is the most sophisticated wine market in the world, due to the choice available to them, and it's terrific that they are continuing to choose New Zealand Wine.

"The 5-and-above market in the United Kingdom, across all wines, has increased 30% in the past two years, from 782 million in 2005 to 1.04 billion in 2007. This takes the overall market share of 5 and above to 25% of the total market in 2007."

New Zealand's share in the 5-and-over market has increased 46% year-on-year - representing 42m of growth.
