Something to celebrate

Published:  18 January, 2007

Politicians and the media are prone to go rather overboard in bemoaning the horrors of alcohol and the havoc it wreaks.

Along with these "on the ground" actions, the industry has also taken to the airwaves to spread a message about responsible drinking. In addition to the now-familiar work of the Drinkaware Trust to spread the message about moderation and responsible drinking, Diageo has launched a high-profile campaign to increase awareness about the social costs of over- consumption. If, like me, you believe that our celebratory attitude towards drunkenness must be tackled before we can do much about problem drinking in the UK, then you will welcome such educational measures.

So, as you gather with your family and friends this Christmas, I hope you will proudly raise a glass to the trade. It has been a challenging yet successful year, and we should remember that the products we make, import, promote and sell will help the vast majority of the British public celebrate and will add to the enjoyment of the festive season.
