Robertson new BRC Director General

Published:  23 July, 2008

Stephen Robertson has been announced as the new Director General of the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

Taking over from Kevin Hawkins, Robertson will take up the post from February 1 2008.

Previously the Marketing Director at Woolworths Group plc, Robertson also worked as B&Q Marketing Director for 7 years.

Sir Geoff Mulcahy, BRC Chairman, commented: "We are delighted that someone of Stephen's calibre is joining the BRC. His range of high-level experience will help us to promote the interests of retailers in the challenging times ahead."

He also thanked Kevin Hawkins for his work over the last three-and-a-half years - a period which he described as one of "accelerating change".

Figures out from the BRC yesterday highlighted the economy is the biggest concern for UK consumers in the next six months.

This has a knock-on effect for retailers in the run-up to Christmas, argued Mike Watkins, a Senior Manager at Nielsen.

He commented: "We are seeing continuing low level sales growth in the grocery sector with an increasing reliance on promotional offers to drive business."
