United Spirits in 17m spend

Published:  23 July, 2008

United Spirits, the Indian company that owns whisky distiller Whyte & Mackay, is to invest more than 17 million in the next three to four years.

The company, led by Vijay Mallya, plans to increase wine production capacity in France and India, and plans to launch up to 100 brands in India.

United Spirits spent just over 10m last summer when it acquired the French firm Bouvet Ladubay, and now plans to double production to eight million bottles a year.

Business head Abhay Kewadkar said: We will put an additional 10m (7.1m) to double the capacity from the current four million bottles and to upgrade the existing facility in France.'
