New directive for Tesco wine suppliers

Published:  23 July, 2008

Supermarket giant Tesco is introducing new packaging requirements for its wine suppliers.

Tesco has asked its suppliers to make changes to wine cases to make both handling and product recognition easier.

After a packaging review, its requests include putting the label design on all four sides of a wine carton for staff to identify products as well as a new country of origin symbol on cases can be quickly matched with their shelf position.

By the end of February 2008 about 600 products (more than 75% of volume) will be packaged under the directive and Tesco plans to roll it out across the entire range by the end of 2008, including bag in box, small bottle format and Champagne.

Dan Jago, Tesco category director for BWS, said: "The revised retail ready packaging is more practical and more effective for in store merchandising, and in the long run, we hope that the research we have conducted is adopted by other UK retailers."
