Government health campaign to be announced

Published:  23 July, 2008

UK: Health secretary, Alan Johnson, is today announce a series of measures today that will improve the nation's health, including alcohol use, from the "womb to the tomb".

He is expected to say that the public is now "less concerned about a nanny state than they are about a neglectful state".

"If our mantra in the 1940s was 'from the cradle to the grave', then our vision for the 21st century should be 'from the womb to the tomb'.

The announcement comes following a report yesterday by Sir David King, who is preparing a report on ministers on impact of obesity on the health service, where he said the future of the NHS is in danger due to the increasing obesity problem.
