Foster's and Gallo enter Superbrand league

Published:  23 July, 2008

Hardys is still the biggest wine brand in the UK but Foster's and Gallo are closing the gap according to new figures.

The 2007 biggest brands table compiled by TNS Worldpanel showed Kelloggs and Heinz are still the best-selling brands in the UK.

Wine producer Hardys has fallen from 28th to 34th position with sales totalling 160 million in the twelve months to April 22 2007. This represents a 7% fall in sales on the previous year.

But Foster's and Gallo have entered the top 50 brands for the first time. Both companies saw sales increasing by a third to 150m and 140m respectively.

James Craig Wood, for Fosters EMEA told Harpers he was "delighted". He attributed its success to improved trade relations, the relaunch of Rosemount and Lindeman's Chile.

Gallo's sales have been driven by its Family Vineyards brand as well as its white Grenache and white Zinfandel, and it now represents a 4.9% share of the UK wine market (AC Nielsen MAT week ending 31 December 2006).
