Bordeaux joins World Heritage list

Published:  23 July, 2008

The city of Bordeaux has been named a Unesco World Heritage site.

The Bordeaux Wine Trade Council said it was "delighted" with the honour, which "pays tribute to the quality of the monuments and buildings of this city and their architectural style".

A spokesman for the council added that Bordeaux had been made a World Heritage site as a "result of the tremendous renovation work to enhance Bordeaux's architectural heritage", which began in 1996 under the auspices of city mayor Alain Jupp.

Other Unesco World Heritage sites include Stonehenge, the Grand Canyon, and Mont-Saint-Michel.
