Published:  23 July, 2008

Sales of Chilean wine have exceeded those of Spain for the first time ever in the UK.

Chile now occupies sixth spot in the list of global wine regions, with a 6.9% share of the UK off-trade.

In the 12-month period up to June 16, Chilean sales between 5-10 grew by 26%, with growth of 12% by volume and 13% by value, with sales of 6.45 million cases and 295 million respectively.

Wines of Chile's UK director Michael Cox said: "Chile is making steady and sustained progress across the board in both volume and value, and this is testimony to the hard work being done by the wineries, and the growing awareness of Chile's naturally diverse styles of quality wines."
