Research reveals price variation in restaurants

Published:  23 July, 2008

Research commissioned by Wine+, the new on-trade wine show, and undertaken by Wine Intelligence in more than 20 white table-cloth restaurants in London has revealed gross variations in wine prices in restaurants.

One well-known premium brand wine was priced between 27.50 and 58 at different restaurants where the set menus were all within 15 - a contentious finding which alone could reignite the mark-up debate.

The research also revealed that the entry point for wines in London is high, and more than one-third of the restaurants visited featured no wines under 20. Only one-third of restaurants were shown to offer tasting notes or any sort of guidance for customers, however overall wine lists are reported to have come a long way in recent years and are more extensive and interesting than ever before.

The full findings will be revealed at Wine+ on 17-18 January at Olympia. Visit www.wineplus.co.uk
