BEWARE BLAND WINES, SAYS WHICH? WINE GUIDE 2002

Published:  23 July, 2008

The Which? Wine Guide 2002', published on 25 October, argues that the industry risks squeezing out smaller, quirkier producers in favour of mainstream selections and household names. Supermarket buyers stock tried and tested' styles, it claims, and are encouraged by some producers and wholesalers to develop a one-stop shop' mentality. The guide says that when it was first published, in 1981, the geographical horizons were very narrow, but that the spectrum of flavours may actually have been broader than it is today. Co-author Susan Keevil said: While our aim is still to steer wine lovers towards value for money, the thrust of our efforts has changed. Finding consistent, drinkable wine is easy nowadays, but buying a bottle with genuine character is where people need a helping hand.' The guide promises to lead readers through the maze of identikit Chardonnays and Cabernets' to wines with individual character.
