Sainsbury's new wine good for the heart'

Published:  23 July, 2008

Sainsbury's has launched a new wine that claims to have 32% more antioxidants than the average red wine.

Red Heart, which will retail for 4.99 and is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, is described as an easy-drinking red wine from Australia'.

A Sainsbury's spokeswoman said: The antioxidant content of red wine is believed to play a role in the health benefits derived from drinking in moderation. The antioxidants in red wine come from the skins and seeds of the grapes. Red Heart is produced in a way that ensures it picks up as many antioxidants as possible.'

Despite the claims, wine writer Jamie Goode - who holds a PhD in plant biology - was unimpressed. On his wineanorak.com website, he said: If red wine has health benefits, it is almost certainly not because of its antioxidant properties. I do wish people would speak to someone knowledgeable on wine and health issues before issuing this sort of disinformation.'
