Corney & Barrow take on yet more on-trade staff

Published:  23 July, 2008

Corney & Barrow, with two new appointments in recent weeks, has added five staff to its on-trade supply area in the past six months, and there are more to come, says on-trade manager James Franklin.

We see a big opportunity in the fact that people are becoming more knowledgeable when they dine out,' said Franklin. They don't want to drink exactly the same as in a supermarket, but instead more unusual, interesting wines and that helps us with our exclusive agencies.'

Rebecca Palmer has joined as an on-trade buyer from Direct Wines, and Charlie Stephenson will add to what is a growing regional sales team, with Corney & Barrow targeting Yorkshire and the north east in particular.

Franklin says that earnings have increased by 50% in the past year, and the company intends to increase by three times again, on current figures. The decision to up the restaurant supply area was taken two years ago as part of a review that included all areas of the business. The on-trade, however, was seen as potentially being the most profitable.

I always referred to our supply of restaurants as the company mistress. It was the bit on the side we dabbled with, but never fully committed to,' said Franklin. That's changing.'
