From blogging to cartoons: another first for Stormhoek

Published:  23 July, 2008

Stormhoek, the South African brand that brought blogging to the wine trade, has embarked on another industry first with the launch of a limited-edition series of bottle designs.

The cartoons are drawn by Hugh MacLeod, the man behind Stormhoek's blogging campaign -which saw bottles sent to bloggers all over the UK and unprecedented media interest from mainstream, technical and wine press.

Nick Dymoke-Marr, managing director of Orbital wines, which owns the Stormhoek brand, commented: It is just another example of us trying to do things differently. I've been a big fan of Hugh's cartoons and drawings ever since I've met him and we thought "Why not put them on the labels and see what the consumers say?" We've approached most of our major trade customers and have not had any real problems.

It's important to us to keep being innovative with Stormhoek and they are behind that. The cartoons will form a new range and will therefore become the front label for the bottle with all the information and legal requirements on the back label.'

According to MacLeod: To me, wine and the human condition go together like two peas in a pod. So I want the designs to explore that relationship... this project is still very new. Virgin territory. In terms of label design, I don't claim to have all the answers. Heck, I don't even claim to have a tenth of them. But this is one steep learning curve I'm thrilled to be on.'

The cartoons should be appearing on bottles of Stormhoek by Christmas.
