Nielsen confirms wine sales fall

Published:  23 July, 2008

Market analyst AC Nielsen has confirmed that off-trade wine sales have struggled since the turn of the year and have recently started to fall.

According to a report published last week, sales in the eight weeks to 22 April fell 2% by value, with white wine sales dipping 5% and red wines flat. Ros, Champagne and sparkling wine sales increased.

Overall, in the year to 22 April, still wine sales rose 3% by both volume and value.

Wine analyst Steve Blunt blamed the fall on growing consumer debt and sharp rises in the cost of utilities, tax and petrol.

In the year to 22 April, Australia and California continued to grow their volumes (up 5% and 13% respectively), while France, Germany and South Africa registered declines (down 4%, 3% and 9% respectively).

Chile's sales remained broadly level, whils Spanish sales increased by 3% and New Zealand's by 23%.
