Jancis Robinson MW calls for cooperation on Burgundy tastings

Published:  23 July, 2008

Jancis Robinson MW OBE has called for better communication and cooperation between the various companies holding tastings of the latest vintage of Burgundy next month.

In a letter to Harpers, the respected author and Financial Times wine correspondent said: A few years ago there were no tastings of young Burgundy in London. This year, I have been invited to the following number of such tastings:

Mon 9 Jan: one;

Tue 10 Jan: five;

Wed 11 Jan: six (including The Bunch);

Thu 12 Jan: two;

Fri 13 Jan: one;

Mon 16 Jan: one.

I'm genuinely grateful for the chance to see these fascinating wines in such convenient settings and thank all those who do the hard work of collecting samples. But do we really have to have this cluster effect? Could there not be better communication between those so determined that their Burgundy tasting has to be midweek? Are they absolutely sure that a tasting on a Monday or Friday is worthless? And does it all have to happen the same week?

Yours worried about my liver, Jancis.'
