Yquem gets mixed up

Published:  23 July, 2008

Despite the success of the 2001 vintage of Sauternes legend Chteau d'Yquem - which was released earlier this month,
with the first tranche selling out in hours and prices on the secondary market already at more than 3,000 a case - eyebrows may have been raised on the Gallic side of the Channel after a UK bar included the 1999 vintage of the wine in its 22 Emperor cocktail.

The Emperor headlines style bar Zuma's cocktail list from next week and is made up of Yquem, luxury vodka-and-sake blend WOKKA SAKi and other secret ingredients'. It is the brainchild of WOKKA SAKi creator Tim Day and Zuma's head barman Paul Birtwistle.

Day commented: I wanted to create a magnificent WOKKA SAKi cocktail, using only the finest and most extravagant ingredients, but also one that resonated an "East meets West" theme.' He continued: The Emperor said it all. It tastes unbelievable and surpassed my expectations.'

Day added that his business partner, Anthony Foster MW, told him: You can't do that that's sacrilege.'
