Surrey Hills vineyards join forces to form ‘English wine region’

Published:  12 March, 2019

Five vineyards based in the Surrey Hills area of outstanding natural beauty have joined forces to form a new English wine region - ‘Vineyards of the Surrey Hills’.

The vineyards forming part of the collaboration, which follows similar initiatives in Kent, Sussex and Hampshire, comprises Denbies Wine Estate, High Clandon, Albury, Chilworth Manor and Greyfriars.

The initiative will officially be launched by the five wineries at a celebratory weekend in June (8-9) where each of the wineries will host unique experiences for visitors to enjoy.

Activities taking place throughout the weekend will range from viewing sculptures, enjoying music or a picnic in historic gardens, exploring a ‘secret vineyard trail’, sampling a range of wines from tasting bars set in the vineyards to participating in a Battle of Waterloo ‘Champagne vs English sparkling taste-off’.

“England is now internationally recognised as a leading producer of top quality wines,” said Nick Wenman, owner of Albury Organic Vineyard and chair of Wine GB South East.

“We are proud to be putting Surrey on the map as a premium wine region, offering some of the very best wines and visitor experiences that England has to share.”

Nurtured on the chalky limestone hills with the same geology as that of the Champagne region, these vineyards have a unique location and have won top international awards for their wines and wine tourism.
