Published:  30 July, 2018

Bodegas La Val’s Waitrose Viña Taboexa Albariño and Freixenet’s Can Sala are among the nine winners in the Wines from Spain 2018 awards.

Altogether 106 wines, whose heritage spans 20 different regions across the country, received distinctions in the accolades which celebrate 'exciting and diverse' Spanish wines in the UK in the sparkling, red, white, rosé and sweet and fortified categories.

Waitrose’s offering was named Best Value and Best Own Label by the 12-strong panel of judges, which included Tim Atkin MW, Peter McCombie MW, and Sarah Abbott MW, while Freixenet collected the Best Cava award

Joining them in the winners' line up were:

Bodegas Felix Sanz’s Viña Cimbrón Verdejo (Best White in Show), Señorio de Rubios’ Manuel d’Amaro Pedral (Best Discovery), Juan de la Barreda Acedo-Rico’s Torre de Barreda (Best Value Red), C&D Wines’ Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva Rioja (Best Red in Show), Williams & Humbert Alegría Manzanilla (Best Value Fortified), Osborne’s Amontillado 51-1 (Best Dry Fortified) and Fernando de Castilla Vermouth (Best Sweet Fortified).

“We were really pleased with the high quality of the entrants this year with some fascinating discoveries which serve to emphasise how Spain just keeps giving in terms of interest and diversity,” an awards spokesperson said.

The winners can now display a prestige seal on their bottles and will also appear in a guide on Spanish wine for the UK market.
