Wakefield predicts best Shiraz vintage in decades

Published:  03 May, 2018

Wakefield Wines has predicted the 2018 Shiraz vintage will be the best in decades.

The Clare Valley winery said it was gearing up for “something truly special” with the 2018 vintage.

“Harvesting is complete, and while we won’t formally assess our red wines for several months, everything we have seen so far is pointing to a five-star vintage that will rival some of best wines we have ever produced,” said MD Mitchell Taylor.

The 2018 vintage would be one to rival the “very best from South Australia”, he added.

The winery was “very excited” about the quality of the classic varieties from this vintage, he said,

In relation to reds - Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz, at this early stage the producer said colours and flavour concentrations in the young wines were the best it had seen “in a long time”.

“The general consensus is that it’s looking like one of the best red vintages of the past decade; for Shiraz in particular, possibly the past century,” said Taylor.

In terms of its white wines - Chardonnay & Riesling, the generally cool season leading up to harvest had brought about lower alcohol levels and at the same time lower yields delivering highly aromatic wines with “very pure and distinct varietal characters”, said Taylor.

“It’s one of those terrific ‘win-win’ situations,” he added.
