Spirits subscription club launches

The Summerton Club, live now, sells a range of the finest spirits from distilleries across the globe including armagnac, brandy, bourbon, cachaça, calvados, cognac, eau de vie, grappa, tequila, rum, gin and whisky.

With membership prices starting at £65 per month for one bottle, the aim of the UK-based business was to guarantee that the bottles send would not be found in local supermarkets.

In addition, although premium, The Summerton Club offers a price guarantee to its members that the price they pay will be less than what a consumer would pay for the same bottle elsewhere, said the business.

"We are promising to bring something different and utterly delicious to the customer's door each month, opening up new possibilities for them in their spirits tasting - widening their knowledge and developing their palate," said Dan Humphrey, who has a background in bringing food and drink products to market: he has developed new products for Fortnum and Mason, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges, and helped launch the Levi Roots brand.

"Spirits have always been popular with a section of society, but now other groups of discerning drinks lovers, and younger people in particular, are discovering the beauty and purity of a fine spirit, aged to perfection,” he said.

But although spirits were popular again, and a growing number of aficionados, there was a lack of consumer knowledge compared to that of wine and beer, he said, adding The Summerton Club would search around the world to bring the best bottles of spirits directly to the customer.

"We may send them a rhum agricole from an estate nestled at the foot of volcanic Mount Pelee in Martinique one month, and a brandy, made naturally from wind-blown apples, from a Cornish cyder farm the next,” he said.
