Ruinart Sommelier Challenge 2018 open for entries

Published:  09 March, 2018

The international Ruinart Sommelier Challenge 2018 has thrown down the gauntlet to UK somms, inviting entries for this year’s competition to be held on 9 April at 67 Pall Mall.

30 places will be available for successful applicants, who will spend a day at the St James private wine club for a seminar and blind wine competition under the tutelage and testing eyes of Ruinart’s chef de caves Frédéric Panaïotis, Ronan Sayburn MS and Xavier Rousset MS.

Based on an international training and mentoring programme, designed to support sommelier education, the award for the winning UK sommelier will be a four day all expenses paid trip to the Champagne region hosted by Frédéric Panaïotis.

The successful UK sommelier will join the winners from 10 other countries, affording networking opportunities and exchange of information in addition to the educational nature of the visit.

Last year’s UK winner was Julia Sewell of The Fat Duck, who said: “The Ruinart Sommelier Challenge seminar was reason enough to enter the competition - insightful, informative and engaging,,” describing her visit to Champagne as “highly rewarding”.

Applications to participate can be made via the Ruinart Sommelier Challenge UK website Ruinart Sommelier Challenge UK and the successful Sommelier candidates will be selected by the judging panel co-host the event.
