Moldovan winery Chateau Vartely sets sight on UK

Published:  05 February, 2018

Moldovan Chateau Vartely has revealed a new strategy to target the UK market.

The winery, which produces a wide range of wines, said it had decided to “take a fresh hands-on” approach and introduce its portfolio to the UK as a 'new discovery' albeit from a very old wine producing country.

Admitting it was a “huge challenge”, Chateau Vartely’s UK sales agent, Martin Rosenberg, told Harpers it was targeting the UK because of the lack of Moldova wines in the country.

“In the UK Moldova as a country is hardly known and its wines are almost nowhere to be found - Laithwaites do sell some through their on-line sales - so we decided to turn our focus on this market,” he said, adding it "may take some time but we are in no rush”.

Reflecting Moldovan wine heritage, the winery’s Mature Reserve range is marketed under the Taraboste label, a namem, which was given to the Aristocrats of the Roman period between 106 – 271 BC.

With three grape varieties, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet-Sauvignon these wines are produced in limited quantities using very ripe grapes and are aged in oak barrels.

The mid-range wines, known as Individo from the French word individu meaning individual, are a testament to the knowledge and experience of wine makers using traditional and modern methods to create a blended wine, with a personal touch.

It features six varieties of wine using grapes such as Merlot, Malbec, Syrah, Cabernets Sauvignon and Blanc. As well as the less well-known grapes to the UK market, Feteasca Neagra and Regala, both of which are Moldovan grapes.

At the entry level Chateau Vartely comprises eight varieties of IGP wines. Three red, four white and a rosé. Apart from the Traminer and Feteasca Regala grape, the others are regular grape varieties well known in the UK, including Chardonnay, Malbec – Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Pinot Noir.

Chateau Vartely, which exports its wines to more than 30 countries across five continents, also produces a white and rosé sparkling wine, two liqueur wines, Ice Wine and a small selection of distillates.
