Wine Buyer

We specialise in the on-trade and independent off-trade, supplying a wide range of customers from owner-operated establishments, fine-dining and Michelin-starred restaurants to gastro pubs, catering companies and restaurant groups. In the off-trade we work with a network of independent retailers, wholesalers, regional and Fine Wine merchants located throughout the UK. We also have an experienced Private Client department who offer customers expert advice and guidance on all aspects of Fine Wine including En Primeur purchasing and specialist long term storage.

We are looking to recruit an experienced Buyer with a proven track record of sourcing commercially attractive wines of exceptional quality for our respective market sectors. The Buyer will be a key contributor at operational level to the commercial success and growth ambitions of the business.

This role requires an experienced, self-motivated and highly knowledgeable wine industry professional with the ability to deliver on specific objectives.

Principal responsibilities will include:

  • Sourcing and procuring new commercial and strategic products and actively seeking out a pipeline of exciting new agencies and producers from around the world. 
  • Researching own label product to help blend and produce a strong portfolio of own label wines
  • Providing quality control of all product (including own label and organic).
  • Supporting sales with customer visits, wine training and initiatives to capitalise on short term opportunities in response to market trends.
  • Working with our purchasing team to plan purchase volumes and liaising directly with our extensive international supplier base to maximise relationships to mutual benefit.

The role requires:

  • A minimum of 4 years’ experience of sourcing wines.
  • Significant experience of working with wine producers in their domain.
  • Ability to blend own label wine.
  • An in-depth knowledge of the international wine industry and current market trends with a thorough understanding of logistical issues of importing wine from around the globe.
  • An extensive network of existing and relevant international supplier relationships.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Sound technical knowledge of wine and a talent for accurately tasting and assessing the quality of wine, not only finished bottled wine but also raw unfinished tank samples.
  • Excellent commercial acumen and attention to detail.
  • Successful negotiation and closure skills coupled with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Effective relationship-building and relationship-management capability (internal and external).
  • Proven track record in managing projects against agreed targets and objectives.

Pre-requisites for the role:-

  • Languages essential, in particular fluency in French and Italian.
  • WSET Diploma or relevant wine industry qualification (wine making experience preferred).
  • Clean driving license and ability to travel

This is a fulltime role requiring flexibility to work around the commitments of the business.  Bancroft Wines operates from a high quality office in London Bridge, SE1 and offers a competitive remuneration and benefits package.
