New distribution deal for Stellenbosch Saxenburg

Published:  23 July, 2008

Premium Stellenbosch estate Saxenburg has moved distribution from Moreno Wines to start-up Colours of Africa.

The new company has been set up by Lynda Mellor, Saxenburg's head of marketing and development, and Bob Stopp, formerly of Vinoceros and KWV. Although Mellor will remain on Saxenburg's payroll, the estate will have no financial interest in the new distributor. Saxenburg will be joined in Colours of Africa's portfolio by Domaine Capion, its sister estate in the Languedoc.

Mellor said she was aiming to sell 10% of Saxenburg's production, 25,000 cases, and 5% of Domaine Capion's 8,000 cases in the UK market. It will be hard, but we used to sell around this much years ago when we were handled by Edward Cavendish, before they decided to concentrate on KWV [around six years ago],' she said.

She added: We are not just a middleman adding a margin. We can deliver a wider range of products, more competitive prices and a direct line to the cellar door.'
