Elephant Hill aims to strengthen UK presence via Corney & Barrow link

Published:  14 September, 2017

Hawke’s Bay winery Elephant Hill has joined forces with Corney & Barrow to strengthen its presence in the UK market.

As part of the partnership between the wine merchant and the Syrah and Chardonnay specialist, Corney & Barrow will be looking after the Elephant Hill portfolio of wines on an exclusive basis in the UK on and off-trade with immediate effect.

The deal formed part of Elephant Hill’s strategy to spread the regional story of New Zealand beyond Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, said the winery, which was established in 2003.

With its “reputation, impressive pedigree of producers, and market experience”, Corney & Barrow would help the Hawke’s Bay winery achieve this, said European & Americas sales manager, Giles James.

“Our aspirations to establish a reputation for Hawke’s Bay’s as a producer of world class Chardonnay and Syrah may be high, but we think they are definitely achievable,” he added.

Despite being a “young winery”, Elephant Hill’s wine portfolio already showed the “sense of place and quiet self-assurance of a true classic”, said Rebecca Palmer, buyer & associate director, Corney & Barrow.

“For some time now, we have been scrutinising Hawke’s Bay for the ‘right’ producer for us, one whose wines have world-class potential and whose approach and philosophy fit our own, qualitatively and relationally,” she said.

Elephant Hill has been present in the UK market previously, but with a much smaller range. Wines that will become available to Brits for the first time via the new partnership include Elephant Hill Reserve Chardonnay and Syrah alongside top tier Airavata Syrah, Hieronymus Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot.
