Waitrose wine sales soar

Published:  14 September, 2017

Waitrose has revealed that its wine sales for the week ending 9 September were up by more than 31% on the same period last year driven by promotions.

The retailer ran a half price event and a 25% off three bottles of wine promotion, which saw wine sales boosted - the event running across all its wine range.

Currently the retailer is offering up to a third off selected wines including Bertrand de Bessac NV, French, Champagne 75cl which is reduced from £24.99 to £15.99, Canaletto, Pinot Grigio, Italian, White Wine

75cl reduced from £7.99 to £5.99 and Tsantali Organic Cabernet Sauvignon Halkidiki, Greece 75cl at £6.99 down from £9.49.

Waitrose strategy is to give consumers additional reasons to visit its shops. It currently has 11 wine bars within its sites as well as sushi bars, in-store cafes and juice bars. It also champions British produce and sells over 100 English and Welsh wines.

The news comes as the retailer revealed its interim results ending 29 July 2017 with gross sales up by 2.3% to £3.32bn and like-for-like sales were up 0.7%.

Operating profit before exceptional items was down by 17.4%, held back by lower margin due to higher cost prices.

The retailer revealed that it is investing more heavily in its existing estate and is on track to achieve a range of improvements in 130 branches, with 68 having received investment in the first half of this year. A further 62 are due to receive investment in the second half of the year.
