Sassicaia goes mini

Published:  23 July, 2008

Top Italian wine producer Sassicaia has launched a limited-edition Mini Cooper S sportscar. Twelve have been produced.

'The idea was born over dinner with Sassicaia's estate owner, Marchese Incisa della Rocchetta,' said Marcello Meregalli, an Italian distributor. 'We jokingly made the proposal to design the Mini like a bottle of Sassicaia. A few days later, we sent computer-generated images of what it would look like, and the Marchese loved it.'

Costing euro&40,500 (27,400) each, the cars have been customised to resemble a bottle of Sassicaia, painted in its traditional colours blue, gold and cream with a reproduction of the wine's 1985 label on the roof.

'A vintage which celebrates Sassicaia's most acclaimed year,' said Incisa della Rocchetta.

The super-customised Minis were presented by luxury car dealer Alessandro Breveglieri of Milan's UKGarage at the Monte Carlo Motor Show.

Eight of the Mini Sassicaias already have been sold in France and Italy.
