E&J Gallo is hoping to cash in on the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc phenomenon with its first wine from New Zealand going on sale in the UK.

Starborough Sauvignon Blanc, which has an rrp of £8.99, is the latest foray by the Californian giant into other regions around the world.

The new wine is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes sourced entirely from the Marlborough region on New Zealand's South Island, and has a "crisp, zesty style" that epitomises the famous style of the area.

Gallo also sells the McWilliams Australian brand in the UK in a joint venture, and a spokeswoman for the company said Gallo was "always on the lookout for interesting opportunities".

Commenting on the new release, Iain Newell, marketing director for Europe, said: "Starborough Sauvignon Blanc delivers the essence and characteristics of New Zealand's World-famous Sauvignon Blanc. We have worked closely with the winemakers to ensure that we offer our UK customers a wine that stands out from the crowd".

Starborough is available in Thresher and Sainsbury's.
