Who's topping the list of celebrity wines?

Published:  05 July, 2016

Celebrity culture can be depressing at the best of times.

But it can prove even more so when companies and individuals put their heart and soul into making a product, then a celebrity comes along and puts their face and name to a brand and hey, presto! - the product sells out overnight.

And wine app Vivinio has shown that celebrity pulling power isn't going to wane any time soon.

A survey which asked users to score celebrity wines, found that Nicki Minaj's wine offering, Mynx Fusions Moscato, is more popular than Brad and Angelina's Miraval Rose, while the 'godfather' of wine himself, Francis Ford Coppola's wine beats that of presidential hopeful Donald Trump.

Police frontman Sting however, topped the list with red offering Sister Moon - named after one of his songs.

There is a long history of celebrities endorsing their own brands with everything from perfume and make-up to kitchen appliances making the list (who could forget the George Foreman grill?)

But as global wine production steadily rises (it grew 2% in 2015 according to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine), wine is increasingly becoming a market that holds a great deal of opportunity.

The Vivino app asked users to rate celebrity wines based on a five star rating system and the results were as follows:

1. Sting - Sister Moon - 4.2/5

2. Francis Ford Coppola - Director's Cut - 4.0/5

3. Nicki Minaj - Mynx Fusions Moscato - 4.0/5

4. Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie - Miraval Rose - 3.8/5 and Sam Neill - Picnic Pinot Noir - 3.8/5

5. Donald Trump - Monticello Red - 3.7/5

6. Cliff Richard - Vida Nova rose - 3.6/5

7. The Rolling Stones - Forty Licks Merlot - 3.4/5

8. Drew Barrymore - Barrymore Pinot Grigio - 3.3/5

9. AC/DC - Back In Black - 3.1/5

Two of the more famous names on the list, Hollywood megastars Brad and Angelina came in at number four, proving that their wine is perhaps anything but 'the pitts'.

Perhaps inevitably, their first wave of rosé wine offered by Berry Bros & Rudd in the UK sold out within days of release back in 2013.

"The Château Miravel Rosé 2012 is the first wine made by the somewhat unlikely partnership of the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel and Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, all in strict adherence to organic viticultural practices," said Berrys' buyer Simon Field MW at the time.

"The Hollywood pair has, by all accounts, been fairly hands-on and are extremely pleased with the results, as are we."
