Graham's Port and BBR mark royal birthday with unique limited edition release

Published:  31 March, 2016

Graham's Port is partnering with Berry Bros. & Rudd on a limited edition Port to mark the forthcoming 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.

Just 500 bottles of Graham's 90 Port will be released.

The Port itself is drawn from the exceptional harvests of 1912, the last great year prior to the outbreak of World War One; 1924, one the the best inter-war vintages; and 1935, the jubilee year of King George V.

The Symington family, which owns Graham's Port, made the selection personally from the few barrels of each wine remaining in its cellars.

Simon Field, MW, Port buyer at Berry Bros. & Rudd, said: "The prospect of working with Charles Symington is always one that we relish and when we approached Charles, Paul and Johnny for ideas for something rather special to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday we were confident that they would unearth something exceptional. They have.

"The fruits of very old casks from three venerable vintages, of which two are significantly over 90 years of age, this outstanding blend impresses immediately with its deep colour and richly generous aromas.

"The palate is even more intriguing, teasing initially with a beguiling cocktail of high spirits and spritely wisdom. It's only with a little time in glass that the true greatness becomes evident; patience is rewarded.

"There is no substitute for experience, and our experience should be accompanied by humility and gratitude."

Johnny Symington of Symington Family Estates, said: "Port has long been used to toast royal and historic occasions by every conceivable British institution for centuries, hence this seemed an entirely appropriate collaboration.

"We knew we would have to create something very special to pay a fitting tribute to the Queen's 90 years of service to the nation and we believe that we have with the Graham's 90, which we have only been allowed to launch by special permission of the Port Wine Institute."

Graham's 90 Port will be available in the UK exclusively through Berry Bros. & Rudd from March 30.

It will retail at £700.00 per bottle.

Each bottle sold includes a charitable contribution from Graham's to The Patron's Fund, which supports a collection of UK and Commonwealth charities of which the queen is the patron.

A minimum contribution of £10,000 is guaranteed.
