Prestigious AfrAsia Bank Cape Wine Auction announces 2016 return

Published:  28 January, 2016

The AfrAsia Bank Cape Wine Auction is set to return on February 12 and 13 this year.

All proceeds from the auction go to charities dedicated to youth education in wine farm communities across South Africa.

Some 15 charities currently benefit from the auction, including the Pebbles Project, the Maranatha Trust and Pinotage Youth Development.

The 2015 auction raised some £450,000 in three hours - a record for charity fundraising in Africa.

The single-most highly valued lot last year came from Vrede en Lust and included accommodation for up to eight sharing in a luxury, private, ocean-side villa on Eden Island.

It ultimately sold for some £34,000.

This year's auction will take place at the Klein Constantia Estate, outside Cape Town.

Lots include a week for eight guests at Villa Montefino in Portofino Italy, a unique 14-bottle vertical vintage collection of Rupert & Rothschild Baron Edmond, five nights for four couples at the 18th century Chateau De Vezins in France, and many more.

Friday night will also see the return of the American Express Barrel Auction, which offers the opportunity to taste and bid for cases of wine from some of South Africa's leading winemakers' most exclusive barrels.
