Premium Chilean wine producerBodega Volcanes de Chile has appointed British-born Ben Gordon as its new managing director.

Gordon has been working in the Chilean wine trade since 2006, first as export director for Carolina Wine Brands and subseuqently as commercial director at Viña Estampa.

Also new to the team is export and marketing manager, Ignacio Campo, who will work with Bodega Volcanes' head winemaker Pilar Díaz to promote the brand.

Bodega Volcanes seeks to exploit the unique volcanic terroirs of Chile and what they have to offer viticulture.

It currently has three estates: Cauquenes in Maule, around 400 km south of Santiago; Lomas de Leyda in Valparaiso, close to the Pacific; and La Higuera in Maipo Alto.

Grupo Vinos del Pacifico, which owns Bodega Volcanes, is aiming to position it as a key producer of premium wines in Chile.

José Yuraszeck, president of Bodega Volcanes de Chile, said: "We are fully committed to the development of our innovative winery, and that is why we have decided to take this decisive step to give much more independence to this project within the GVP Group so that it has its own team of hugely talented and experienced professionals.

"The focus will be on maintaining the quality winemaking that has been a constant during the first five years for this winery and increasing sales and distribution for these wines via an aggressive commercial strategy."

The news comes as Wine of Chile's president, Mario Pablo Silva, called on the Chilean wine trade to focus on premiumisation.

"In order to rival the best wine-producing countries in the world, Chile has to identify, its strengths, redefine the category and ensure we are only producing wines of quality," he said.

Bodega Volcanes de Chile is distributed in the UK through Stone Vine & Sun.
