Boschendal targets premium on-trade with new range of wines

Published:  13 January, 2016

South Africa's Boschendal winery has launched a new range of wines developed specifically for the on-trade, as part of its 330th anniversary.

The Boschendal Sommelier Selection comprises at launch a Chenin Blanc, a Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinotage.

The Pinotage is a new varietal for Boschendal, despite it being the best known South African grape variety.

The range has been developed by the winemakers at Boschendal in collaboration with the South African Sommelier's Association and Christian Campbell, executive chef at The Werf Restaurant on the Boschendal estate.

They have been designed to emphasise texture and drinkability, and to complement food flavours without being overwhelmed by them.

Garreth Anderson, managing director of DBG, which owns Boschendal, said: "The new range of Boschendal Sommelier Selection wines was developed to make the Boschendal wines and brand more relevant to the premium restaurant sector.

"Boschendal has strong brand awareness but limited distribution in this sector and our ambition is to grow this market with this range of exclusive wines."

The new range will be only available to selected restaurants and hotels around the world, as well as at the Boschendal restaurants on the estate and at its cellar door.

The Boschendal Estate, which dates back to 1685, is situated in the Franschhoek Valley. It was acquired by DGB in 2005.
