Oddbins sends love letters in attempt to win over Naked Wines staff - report

Published:  26 June, 2015

Oddbins has been accused of trying to poach staff from Naked Wines by sending them wine and love letters.

A report by The Guardian claims Oddbins has been trying to lure as many as 30 staff form the online specialist in a bid to build up its own digital presence.

Paraphrasing Shakespeare, one of the messages, on a pink background and adorned with hearts, said: "Shall I compare your skills to the rest of the industry? Yours art more lovely and more fabulous."

Another said: "We've been following your career and decided we need you."

Oddbins refused to confirm that it was behind the cheeky stunt. The Guardian quoted managing director Ayo Akintola as saying: "I will not comment on rumours and speculation. However, I can say that our ambition is to make Oddbins the very best independent drinks retailer in the UK and to achieve this we have a multi-faceted recruitment strategy to hire the very best in class people across all areas of the business."

Naked Wine managing director Eamon FitzGerald told harpers.co.uk: "'I'm not surprised rival companies are eyeing up our talented staff. If I was in their position I'd want them too.

Our one and only focus is on improving the business for our angel customers, so I'm not worried about these sort of things.'

Naked was bought by Majestic Wine in a £70 million deal in April.

The messages include the theme "love your work" and a Twitter account has been set up under the name @LoveYourWorkUK. It is following a number of Naked employees including marketing manage Kate Keogh, mobile developer Sebastian Hopley, customer retention manager Joe Parker and social media manager Sophie Waring.
