MMD adds to Italian range with Tuscans from Mazzei-owned estates

Published:  18 June, 2015

Importer Maisons Marques & Domaines has strengthened its links with Italy's Mazzei family by taking on two of its Tuscan estates.

MMD has added the agencies for Chianti Classico estate Castello di Fonterutoli and Tenuta Belguardo in the Maremma region of Tuscany.

The UK firm first linked up with the Mazzei family for its Sicily estate Zisola in 2013.

MMD managing director Richard Billett said: "The Mazzei family is one of the most acclaimed names in Italian wine with a rich history and heritage and also a vision for the future.

"In particular, the addition of one of the most sought after Chianti estates, at a time when premium Italian wines are enjoying positive momentum, strengthens our proposition and underlines MMD's commitment to the Italian category."

Giovanni Mazzei, export area manager of Marchesi Mazzei, added: "Joining MMD means joining a distributor that we feel represents the level of excellence and commitment we consider important.

"We are both family-owned companies, sharing similar values and we look forward to a long and prosperous working relationship."

Fonterutoli (pictured) comprises 117ha of vineyards, largely planted with Sangiovese but with a small amount of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Its wines include Badiola IGT 2012 (rrp £14.99), Chianti Classico 2013 (£21.99), Ser Lapo Chianti Classico Riserva (£24.99), Mix 36 2011 (£73.99) and Siepi 2011 (£97.99).

Tenuta Belguardo covers 60ha with Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante, Vermentino, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and other indigenous varieties.

Its range includes Vermentino 2014 (rrp £16.99), Rosé 2014 (£16.99), Bronzone Morellino di Scansano Riserva 2011 (£24.99) and Tenuta Belguardo 2011 (£46.99).
