Jackson Family Wine collaborates with Telsa's new energy innovation to reduce costs

Published:  03 June, 2015

Jackson Family Wines has been working in collaboration with Tesla, the car manufacturer turned energy provider and has adopted the Tesla Powerwall product at six of its wineries in California.

The Tesla Powerwall was launched at the end of April in California. The system leverages the technology that founder Elon Musk helped develop for the Tesla Motor vehicles to harness the power of solar technology in homes and businesses.

JFW was an early collaborator with Tesla and installed 21 stationary storage systems across six of its wineries in Sonoma, Napa and Monterey.

"When Tesla approached us to collaborate on energy storage, we recognized that this relationship would be a first of its kind in the wine business."

The collaboration allowed for JWF to pilot the technology in conjunction with Tesla while adopting cost-saving measures which "demonstrate a competitive return on investment"

Further the statement said: "The Tesla systems offer us one of the most advanced solutions currently in the market to help improve our energy and operational efficiencies through the consumption of clean power while simultaneously reducing our costs."

The installations have helped to optimise their operations, particularly around harvest time when they saw a substantial increase in energy use due to  heavy use of refrigeration/cooling, lighting, compressed air, and process water treatment during that time.

Tesla Motor company was founded by Elon Musk, an entrepreneur from Silicon Valley who is part of the PayPal Mafia. He went on to help develop the technology that is used in Tesla Motors and is used in the new Powerwall.

According to the Tesla website the company is expanding its efforts to renewable energy beyond just motor vehicles.

"Tesla introduces Tesla Energy, a suite of batteries for homes, businesses, and utilities fostering a clean energy ecosystem and helping wean the world off fossil fuels. Tesla is not just an automotive company, it's an energy innovation company."

The company's goal is to enable zero emissions power generation and to make it commercially viable for personal use in homes as well as for businesses.
