Spirit distributor Maxxium UK has named Mark Riley as its new managing director, who will take up the role next month.

Riley, the current off-trade sales director, will take over from Huw Pennell, who is moving to Edrington as the new European regional managing director. Edrington is one of Maxxium UK's major shareholders, and owns an equal share in the company with Japanese spirit business, Beam Suntory.

Riley joined the company in 2009 as commercial operations director from Beam Global, before stepping into the off-trade role in 2012.

He said he was delighted to be head up the company at a pivotal time in its development. "We have just strengthened our portfolio with the integration of the Beam Suntory brands which alongside our Edrington brands create an unrivalled whisky offering and broadened liqueurs and specialties range."

"This is an exciting time as we recruit consumers into whisky and help them discover this wonderful category. Our expertise in whiskies and mixology will be a key part of our growth strategy and I look forward to partnering with our customers in this new chapter at Maxxium," he said.

According to accounts filed at Companies House in December, in the 12 months to March 2014, the Stirling-based company reported pre-tax profits up 15% to £6.26m, with turnover up 2% to £246.9. Operating profit also rose 11% to £6.69m.

Maxxium UK distributes malt, blended and imported whiskey and spirits into the UK. Its brands include The Macallan, Laphroaig, The Famous Grouse, Teacher's, Cutty Sark, Sourz and Midori.
