Jascots Wine Merchants launched its own brand Italian sparkling wine on draught called 'Vino Vispo' targeting the on-trade causal dining sector.

The on-trade supplier is hoping to capitalise on the recent growth of Prosecco across the UK and offer causal dining outlets an alternative that can stay fresher than bottled Prosecco that has been opened.  It is made from the Glera grape, the same grape variety that is used to make Prosecco,

"Though it is made from Glera which is the same grape variety that makes Prosecco, Vino Vispo is a separate product entirely.  It has a lighter spritz than bottled Prosecco and is a totally different proposition; handled well, it can be fresher and better than wine by-the-glass served from bottles that may have been open for some time," said Adam Porter, Jascots' marketing manager.

By offering an Italian sparkling wine in a keg format more outlets can add an Italian sparkling wine by the glass and reduce wastage from opened bottles that may lose their fizz.

Jascots is hoping that the new formats and the ability to serve an quality Italian sparkling wine by the glass will help make wine more approachable to consumers.

Miles MacInnes Jascots' sales & marketing director said: "We believe it's time to start thinking outside the bottle and put the spotlight on making wine accessible, fun and appealing. There is an onus on these outlets to stay innovative on product and branding, and where much has been made of food trends and menu adaptations, the wine offering can sometimes get lost. We think Vino Vispo presents an exciting opportunity for operators"

Italian sparkling wine has grown enormously in the UK in recent years.  This week at the March For Independents conference, Tim Wilson from Wilson Drinks Report said: "It is not about sparkling wine, it is about Italian sparkling wine, which saw a 60.1% growth year on year last year."

The rise of Italian sparkling wine has in part been at the expense of Cava, which saw a decline of  10.3% during the same period.  Champagne has remained relatively flat.
