FIRST PORTUGUESE WINE AWARDS FOR UK

Published:  23 July, 2008

The Association of Portuguese Wine Importers held its first Wines of Portugal Awards dinner on 24 February at the Portuguese ambassador's residence in London. Danny Cameron, chairman of the association, said that the intention was to acknowledge the important role played by the trade in promoting Portuguese wines. We are beginning to make real progress with Portugal in the UK market, and this was a way of saying thanks to the trade,' he told Harpers. Waitrose buyer Nick Room's Portuguese selections were lauded, with the supermarket beating rivals Tesco, Sainsbury's, Oddbins and Majestic to The National Retailer Award. London retailer Handford Holland Park won the Independent Retailer Award, and Northcote Manor in Devon was voted the winner of the Restaurant Award. Observer wine columnist and former Harpers editor Tim Atkin MW was presented with the Journalism Award for his coverage of Portuguese wines. Cameron confirmed that the awards dinner is to be an annual event, organised by the Association of Portuguese Wine Importers in conjunction with the Portuguese Trade and Tourism Office.
