Women and more affluent younger drinkers are driving the thirst for wine, alongside an increasing knowledge about wine.

TaiwanTaiwan’s wine imports are dominated by FranceThe Asian Pacific country has experienced rapid growth in wine imports since 2008, and expects this trend to continue.

French wine accounts for one third of imports into Taiwan at 42,500 hectolitres, followed by Spain at 17%, Chile at 12% and Italy at 9%.

Asia Pacific is the third-largest wine consuming continent after Europe and the Americas, and while China has long been a target for most wine producers, given its size and huge potential - it currently ranks as the fifth largest market in the world in terms of size - a number of other countries in the region are also experiencing rapid growth.

Exhibition organiser Kaigo analysed the latest import data published by the National Treasury Administration and Ministry of Finance Taiwan. According to the statistics, the wine imports of the first three quarters of 2014 accounted for almost 130,000 hectolitres, signposting a healthy market.

Looking at the wider region, the Institute of Vine and Wine (OIV) said recently that China consumes 17 million hectolitres annually, although it cautioned that its rapid growth in recent years has been hampered by the government's crackdown on corruption and lavish gift giving. However, Europmintor is still tipping China to become the world's largest wine market by 2017.

Kaigo's annual show Wine & Gourmet Taipei looks to stimulate growth in the Taiwanese market and offer support for international wineries keen to enter the market. Its fifth show takes place from June 26 to 28, 2015 at Taipei World Trade Center / Hall 3.
