Guala Closures and MGJ launch screwcap closure liners with varying oxygen permeability

Published:  01 December, 2014

Guala Closures has joined forces with MGJ to develop a new range of liners for closures with different levels of oxygen permeability.

For the last two years the firms have been working to develop the Oenoseal branded technology which has now been rolled out across all the Guala Closures wine screwcaps.

These include Oenoseal Onyx, which has an aluminium layer to ensure maximum impermeability to oxygen.  This one is aimed at delicate white wines and aromatic rosés.

Its Oenoseal Ivory is aimed at white, rosé and red wines that require a low, but regular, supply of oxygen (nano-oxygenation).  In addition it specifically enables the amount of free SO2 to be reduced when bottling.

Oenoseal Coral is designed for white, rosé and red wines which require a more significant supply of oxygen and claims to help avoid reduction problems for wines with high tannin levels.

"Not only can producers now take advantage of the wide and readily available range of screwcaps that we offer under our wine developers platform - including all the branding customisation that our patented technology allows - but they can now also select the exact liner for the exact wine.  And all without changing the settings on their bottling lines," said Marco Giovannini, chief executive and chairman of the Guala Closures Group.

Founded in Italy in 1954, Guala Closures now has 25 manufacturing plants around the world.  The company's screwcap portfolio includes the WAK, Viiva and Savin Premium. It sustainability programme saw it offset CO2 emissions on the production of 1 billion screwcaps last year.

MGJ is based near Lyon, the heart of the Beaujolais winemaking region, and designs and manufactures seals for the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, food-processing and chemical industries.
